Luz Verde (CUIDEMOS Mexico) will give away free of charge 30 million energy saving lights (CFLs) to low and middle income households across Mexico starting in the city of Puebla.

It is estimated it will cut over 7 million tonnes of CO2 over ten years.

It will save households changing four lights to CFLs US $165 million in reduced energy bills – five times the annual US aid budget to Mexico and, for the poorest 40% of people, the equivalent of around one week’s income.

And it is estimated the programme could save the Mexican government US $585 million in electricity generation infrastructure costs and US $200 million in reduced household electricity subsidy payments each year.
